Education

Dr. M. Soledad Orellano received her Bachelor Degree in Chemistry from the National University of Rio Cuarto (Argentina). In 2014 she obtained a Ph.D. fellowship funded by the Argentinean National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). She worked on the synthesis of chitosan nanoparticles and their therapeutic effect against bovine mastitis pathogens and their interaction with bovine cells in vitro as well. Her thesis work was performed at the National University of Villa Maria (Argentina) under the supervision of Prof. Carina Porporatto and Prof. R. Dario Falcone. She received her Ph.D. degree in 2019 from the National University of Rio Cuarto (UNRC, Argentina).

In 2018 she obtained a Fulbright grant to carry out an internship for three months at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, United States under the supervision of Prof. Raul A. Almeida. She worked on the antimicrobial activity of chitosan nanoparticles against intracellular Staphylococcus aureus using in vitro mammary gland model.

In 2019 she obtained a postdoctoral fellowship funded by CONICET to perform postdoctoral training at UNRC (Argentina) under the supervision of Prof. N. Mariano Correa. She worked on the synthesis of chitosan-based polymeric surfactants and the physicochemical characterization of polymeric micelles using fluorescence molecular probes.

Since March 2021 she joined the Responsive Polymer Therapeutics Group in the framework of a Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie individual fellowship under the supervision of Prof. Marcelo Calderón. She worked in the development of responsive polymeric materials for the delivery of antimicrobials into the bovine udder.

Research

Her research work is focused in the development of polymeric nanomaterias for biomedical applications, with special attention in the design of materials to treat bacterial infections and minimize bacterial resistance.

Her current research project in RPT Group, POLYMAT consist on the development of novel polymeric systems for efficient delivery of gene editing tools, like CRISPR-Cas, for skin gene therapy.
