Education

Federico Begato earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry in November 2016 and his M.Sc. in Chemistry (cum laude) in April 2019 from the University of Padova (Italy). He then continued his studies at the University of Padova, obtaining his Ph.D. in Molecular Sciences (curriculum Chemical Sciences) in 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Cristiano Zonta. His research focused on the development and application of chiral molecular cages for sensing of dicarboxylic acids. During his Ph.D., he spent 2 months at the IQCC in Girona (Spain), under the supervision of Prof. Miquel Costas, studying oxidation reactions in confined systems.

Research

During his bachelor's thesis, he synthesized multimetallic complexes for the determination of the enantiomeric excess of amino acids. His master's thesis, conducted in the research group of Prof. C. Zonta, focused on the synthesis of chiral molecular cages. During his Ph.D., his research concentrated on the application of self-assembled molecular cages for the sensing of chiral carboxylic acids in complex mixtures such as wines and fruit juices, utilizing chiroptical spectroscopies and NMR. Additionally, the research led to the development of a novel methodology for synthesizing hydrolytically stable chiral cages using Diaza-Cope rearrangement. After completing his Ph.D., he continued to work in the same research group for another year as a postdoctoral researcher. During this time, his research was centered on the synthesis of novel hydrolytically stable chiral cages and catalysis in confined systems.
