Education

Johan has experience in research in the field of advanced materials, fracture mechanics, and numerical simulation. During his Master's studies in Advanced Materials Engineering at UPV/EHU in collaboration with Tecnalia, he focused on the development and experimental validation of numerical models for foam composites with phase change materials (PCM). This work aimed to enhance thermal comfort in buildings by efficiently managing heat transfer.

He also pursued a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), where he analyzed the fracture mechanics behavior of welded joints under impact and fatigue loads.
Additionally, he developed a project in collaboration with DIACO to address plastic recycling through the creation of composite materials reinforced with natural and synthetic fibers. This included applying mechanical and thermal characterization methods, as well as extrusion and compression molding processes. At Universidad de America, Johan collaborated on a finite element simulation project aimed at analyzing the deformation and wear of drill bit cutters, establishing correlations between energy efficiency and structural integrity. Furthermore, he has worked on the design of recycled composite materials through his entrepreneurial venture Cobbler, focused on developing geocomposites from recycled polymers and biopolymers to achieve greater durability and resistance to environmental factors.

Research

Johan's research focuses on the adaptation of the properties of biodegradable aliphatic polyester blends by controlling their morphology. Currently, he is working on his PhD project under the supervision of Dra. Nora Aramburu, in the Polymer Technology Group at the Department of Polymers and Advanced Materials: Physics, Chemistry, and Technology at the Faculty of Chemistry
