Education

Mahboubeh Firuzeh received her B.Sc. degree in Materials Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology (Isfahan, Iran), where she focused on the sol-gel synthesis of bioactive glasses. As part of her undergraduate thesis, she developed a novel surfactant-assisted method to fabricate highly porous nanoparticles for the encapsulation and delivery of doxorubicin, targeting drug delivery applications.
She continued her graduate studies at the same university and obtained her M.Sc. in Materials Engineering – Identification and Selection in September 2023. Her master's project involved the development of a bilayer wound dressing with antibacterial functionality in both layers, designed to inhibit bacterial growth on both the wound surface and the dressing exterior. This work involved a multifunctional sponge–nanofiber system incorporating curcumin (Cur) as a bioactive stimulant to promote healing, and quaternized chitosan (QCs) to enhance antibacterial performance.
In June 2025, she joined the POLYMAT group in Engineering of Materials and Sustainable Processes to pursue her research interests in advanced biomaterials.

Research

Her research experience spans electrospinning, sponge fabrication, and the synthesis of bioactive glasses for applications in drug delivery, wound healing, and cancer treatment. At POLYMAT, she is currently working under the supervision of Dr. Matias Luis Picchio and Prof. Aitor Larrañaga. Her current project focuses on the development of mixed-conducting polymer scaffolds designed to modulate microglial polarization, with potential applications in neuroinflammation and regenerative medicine.
