Emulsion polymers are products-by-process whose final properties are governed by multiple characteristics. These characteristics include bulk properties (copolymer composition, molar mass distribution, branching and crosslinking density) and colloidal properties (particle size distribution, surface composition, morphology). The limited fundamental knowledge makes their robust and reproducible production challenging.  Therefore, there is strong academic and industrial interest in developing on-line monitoring and control strategies for emulsion polymerization reactors. However, the developments in this field have been hindered by the lack of development of on-line sensors and mathematical models that can be solved online to be applied in advanced control strategies. Key topics in this area include the assessment of available novel monitoring sensors and the development of mathematical models and control strategies to online control emulsion polymerization reactors.
