POLYMAT Joins "Smart Hydrogels for Personalized Nanomedicine" under the Industry Plan - Euskadi 2030

The research group of Prof. Marcelo Calderon participates in this project led by the Alavese cooperative i+Med, this project aims to position the Basque Country as a global benchmark in personalized medicine, focusing on the development of intelligent nanohydrogels for the controlled release of active ingredients.

A Multidisciplinary Alliance for the Medicine of the Future
The project represents a total investment of 72 million euros over the next three years, with 28 million euros dedicated exclusively to R&D and technological development. It is designed to bridge the gap between advanced research, industrial production, and clinical application.

As a leading research center in polymer science, POLYMAT joins this powerhouse consortium alongside other key agents of the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation (RVCTI), such as CIC biomaGUNE and Gaiker, as well as industrial partners including VIVEBiotech and RPK.

Key Project Impact:

  • Scientific Leadership: Developing next-generation smart hydrogels for "4P" medicine: Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, and Precision.
  • Economic Growth: The initiative is expected to create 232 high-qualification jobs and 370 indirect positions by 2028.
  • Global Reach with Local Roots: Strengthening the Basque biotech ecosystem, which already comprises nearly 300 companies and 6,000 direct jobs.
