Dr. Jon Maiz finished his Bachelor in Chemistry (University of Navarra, Pamplona) in 2007. During this period he spent two short periods (2005/2006) with a scholar fellowship working in INASMET (Tecnalia), in the Materials Technology Centre (Donostia-San Sebastián). In order to finish his studies (2006-2007), he studied his last year of Bachelor in the University "La Sapienza" in Rome, Italy. In 2008 he finished the Master degree of High Specialization in Plastics and Rubber, given by the University International Menéndez Pelayo and CSIC.

In 2013 he received his PhD with the especial mention of "Doctor Europeus" in Applied Chemistry and Polymeric Materials at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (CSIC) and University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) for "Fabrication of polymer nanostructures by "template synthesis" and polymer properties under confinement", under supervision of Prof. Carmen Mijangos. During the thesis work he spent short periods of time at University of Osnabrück (Osnabrück, Germany) working with Prof. M. Steinhart; at University of Massachusetts (Amherst, USA) working with Prof. T. P. Russell; and at the Center of Materials Physics (CSIC-UPV/EHU) in San Sebastián with Prof. A. Arbe.

After his PhD period, he started working as a postdoc in the Group of Thermoelectric Nanostructures of the Institute for Microelectronics of Madrid (CSIC). Finally, he moved to Bordeaux (France) as a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères organiques (LCPO)-(Université de Bordeaux/CNRS/Bordeaux INP) under supervision of Prof. G. Hadziioannou.

Honors and awards

As recognition of this International PhD thesis, he received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award in 2015 given by the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). Moreover, he was awarded for one of his publications to the best scientific article in Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis published in 2013 given by GECAT, (Grupo Especializado de Calorimetría y Análisis Térmico de las RSEQ y RSEF), performed in Spain being the author less than 35 years old.


During the period in INASMET he was involved in different characterizations of inorganic compounds. After, in his Master´s project in 2008, he was working as a researcher at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (CSIC) in a project called "Rheological and thermal characterization of thermoreversible gels". During his PhD period he worked on polymer nanostructure fabrication methods, especially using self-ordered porous alumina templates, as well as on the effects of nanoconfinement on the physical behavior of polymers, in particular on the crystallization and on the molecular dynamics. Some fields of interest include the fabrication of tailored one-dimensional pores of porous aluminum oxide template of controlled diameter and length and characterization techniques as thermal analysis, spectroscopic, scattering and microscopy techniques.

In the Institute for Microelectronics of Madrid (CSIC), particularly he was studying the thermoelectric properties of different semiconducting polymers, such as PCDTBT, in order to try to understand how this type of donor-acceptor polymers can be used as thermoelectric materials.

Finally, in the last Postdoc that he did, first, he worked with ZnO-based materials (surrounded by polymer matrix), such as nanoparticles or nanowires, where they have attracted the scientific interest due to their successful implementation in piezoelectric nanogenerator; and second, with ferroelectric polymers such as P(VDF-TrFE) in order to understand the structure-function relationships in this kind of copolymers.
